Deciding to have your first dermal filler treatment is a big step, and it's completely natural to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. At Bailey's Clinic, we want every client to feel informed, comfortable, and confident — so here's an honest look at exactly what to expect from your first appointment.
Before your appointment
Preparation starts before you even walk through the door. In the days leading up to your appointment, we recommend:
- Avoiding blood-thinning medications and supplements (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) for 48 hours if possible, as these can increase bruising
- Staying well hydrated — this helps your skin respond better to filler
- Avoiding alcohol for at least 24 hours before treatment
- Arriving with clean skin, free from makeup on the treatment area
If you have any medical conditions or are taking medications, please let us know in advance so we can advise accordingly.
The consultation
Every first appointment begins with a thorough consultation. This isn't a rushed formality — it's the most important part of the process. We'll discuss your goals, examine your facial anatomy, and explain exactly what filler can (and can't) achieve.
We'll also go over the different filler options, talk through the treatment plan, and provide transparent pricing before anything happens. You'll never feel pressured to proceed — if you'd like to go away and think about it, that's absolutely fine.
During the treatment
Once you're happy to go ahead, we'll cleanse the treatment area and apply a topical numbing cream if needed. Most modern fillers also contain a local anaesthetic, which makes the process much more comfortable than you might expect.
The filler is injected using either a fine needle or a blunt-tip cannula, depending on the area being treated. The whole process typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. You'll be able to see the results immediately, and we'll hand you a mirror throughout so you can see how things are progressing.
"We never rush a filler appointment. Taking our time means better placement, more natural results, and a client who feels genuinely looked after."
What to expect afterwards
After treatment, it's normal to experience some mild swelling, tenderness, and possibly a small amount of bruising at the injection sites. This is temporary and usually resolves within a few days. Swelling tends to be most noticeable in the first 24 to 48 hours — especially with lip filler.
We'll provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, but in general:
- Avoid touching or pressing on the treated area for 6 hours
- Avoid intense exercise, saunas, and steam rooms for 24 to 48 hours
- Sleep on your back if possible for the first night
- Stay hydrated and use arnica cream if bruising occurs
When will I see the final results?
While results are visible immediately, the filler will continue to settle over 2 to 4 weeks. During this time, any swelling subsides and the filler integrates naturally with your tissue. We always recommend a review appointment at 2 weeks to check your results and make any small adjustments if needed.
Dermal fillers typically last between 6 and 18 months depending on the product used and the area treated. Lip filler tends to metabolise faster, while areas like the cheeks and jawline often last longer.
Choosing the right clinic
Choosing where to have your filler is just as important as choosing to have it. Always look for a qualified, insured practitioner who prioritises a thorough consultation and a natural approach. At Bailey's Clinic, we pride ourselves on delivering results that enhance your features without looking overdone.
If you're considering dermal filler for the first time, we'd love to welcome you for a no-obligation consultation.
